The inevitable time has come for a couple of film that have been in development by Fox for a while. According to the creator of some of the Marvel Comics most recognized characters, the films based on the mutant Gambit, the group X-Force, and the supervillian Doctor Doom are all dead. For now.
Deadpool and X-Force mastermind, Rob Liefeld, took to Twitter his frustrations that the films mentioned above have been ‘killed’ by the Fox/Disney merger.h
Pour one out for ol’ X-Force. Victim of the merger. $800 million grosser easy. https://t.co/1ZCfYb9Ii5— robertliefeld (@robertliefeld) January 11, 2019
“Pour one out for ol’ X-Force. Victim of the merger. $800 million grosser easy”, Liefield replied to Twitter user Daniel Richtman. The latter also mentioned in his Twitter feed that the Gambit and Doctor Doom are officially off the table.
It is a bit surprising that the studio pulled the plug on the X-Force movie, since Deadpool has been a big draw on the big screen. On the other hand, the Gambit movie has been struggling to see the light of day for a looooong time.
The Gambit movie, which had Channing Tatum in the lead role, has postponed production more the three times. Mostly for creative differences with the directors that have been attached to the film. Gambit was supposed to start shooting in February, but obviously that’s not gonna happen.
The X-Force film was also an intriguing project. The supergroup film was being developed by director Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Bad Times at the El Royale). In the past, also according to Liefield, the script for the group lead by Cable and Deadpool was as loyal to the source material as any other Marvel product.
Hopefully these films will not be shelved in full once the Fox/Disney merger is officially done.
