Miles Teller to Play Goose’s Son in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Top Gun: Maverick has cast Miles Teller as the young protégé to Tom Cruise’s Maverick.

Teller will portray the son of Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) late best friend Goose in what said to be a lead role in the sequel. Anthony Edwards portrayed Goose in the original Top Gun.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in sci-fi thriller Oblivion, is directing the movie. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first film, will produce with Cruise and Skydance CEO David Ellison.

A follow-up to Tony Scott’s 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time, with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

This latest project will be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters, and will explore the end of the era of dogfighting. Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the sequel, which is set to release on July 12, 2019.

Teller was competing for the part with Glen Powell (Hidden Figures) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Apocalypse). After testing with Cruise, it was ultimately Teller, who managed to win over the producers.

Teller is best known for his role in Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash and his recurring role as Peter in the Divergent franchise. He recently appeared in the boxing drama Bleed for This and the military drama Thank You For Your Service, and will next be seen in Nicholas Winding Refn’s Amazon original series Too Old to Die Young, which is expected to premiere in 2019.

The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away” performed by Berlin.
